Reading interest is a vital component of students’ intellectual growth, academic success, and personal development. In the context of higher education, reading is not limited to textbooks and examination preparation; it also includes the development of curiosity, critical thinking, imagination, language proficiency, and lifelong learning habits. However, in the digital age, the reading habits and interests of college students are undergoing rapid transformation. The present paper examines the trends, challenges, and implications of reading interest among college students. It discusses how reading interest influences academic performance, cognitive development, communication skills, and social awareness. The paper further explores the factors affecting students’ reading interest, such as technological distractions, examination-oriented learning, lack of access to quality reading materials, and changing lifestyle patterns. Based on a conceptual and analytical approach, the paper highlights the significance of promoting reading culture in higher education institutions. The discussion suggests that libraries, teachers, parents, and educational policies play an essential role in cultivating reading habits and sustaining reading interest among students. The paper concludes that reading interest remains a crucial educational need in the twenty-first century and that systematic efforts are required to nurture it among college learners.
