Abstract

Unemployment is one of the most important reasons for underdevelopment as human capital remains
unutilized which not only affects the productivity of a country but results in many social and economic
problems. (Bansal & Jain, 2019) The level of unemployment was generally high in the northern parts of
India as compared to its southern parts. But, the level of socio-economic deprivation was high in the
north-central states and it decreases towards the north, south, east and north-eastern parts of India. The
spatial variations in the level of unemployment may have been due to variations in the level of rural
unemployment, household size and high population density, etc. as these variables of socioeconomic
deprivation have a higher level of significant relationship with the unemployment. (Khan et al. 2012)
The prevalence of skill mismatch in the labour market which renders even highly qualified individuals
jobless. Closure, lay-off retrenchment may be some reasons of unemployment in India.
