Family Support, Peer Groups and Local Environment in The Development of an Olympic Hockey Player: A Case Study of Harmanpreet Singh

Abstract

Background: The development of elite athletes is influenced by a combination of personal, social, and environmental factors. Although physical talent and systematic training are essential for sporting excellence, family support, peer relationships, and local community environments also play a significant role in shaping athletic careers. Understanding these influences provides valuable insights into the developmental pathways of successful athletes.

Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of family support, peer groups, and local environment in the development of Harmanpreet Singh as an elite hockey player and Olympic medalist.

Methods: The study adopted a qualitative content analysis approach. Information was collected through structured and unstructured interviews, open-ended questionnaires, personal records, educational certificates, sports certificates, photographs, and published documents. Data were obtained from Harmanpreet Singh, his family members, coaches, relatives, teammates, and peer group members. The collected information was analyzed using the Content Analysis Technique.
