Abstract

The Dalit political crisis and power transfer in India from 1945 to 1947 were a complex issue, involving Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's All India Scheduled Caste Federation and the dissolution of the alliance. The dalit political class faced a double crisis: a change in patronage and a lack of representation or legitimacy. The Congress party and other religious minorities were defined during the power transfer, and Ambedkar was excluded from formal power transfer negotiations. The organised pan-Indian dalit movement began in 1921 with the All India Depressed Classes Association, which was established in 1932. Dr. Ambedkar left the group and established the All India Depressed Classes Congress (ACDCC) in 1936. The Congress struggled to gain the backing of the majority of dalit voters, and the dalit elite eventually aligned with the Congress party in non-Congress provinces like Bengal.
