In the history of Britain’s relationship with the European Union (EU), one of the most defining features of this relationship is the ‘awkward’ and ‘reluctant’ partnership that Britain exhibits towards the EU. This article locates the historical context of Britain’s relations with the EU from the the interwar period to the eve of the Maastricht treaty. By highlighting this history, this article tries to locate Brexit through the complexities within British domestic politics and its idea of European integration.
