Abstract

Romantic relationships and natural sexual urges are universal aspects of human development, particularly during adolescence. However, adolescent relationships are often viewed as a threat to family honor, especially when they cross boundaries of religion, caste, or economic status. In some cases, aggrieved parents misuse legal provisions to disrupt these relationships and control their children's choices. Data shows that one in four cases resolved under the POCSO Act 2012 involves consensual "romantic relationships" between adolescents. A more balanced approach is urgently needed, as simply educating children is insufficient to address the complexities of teenage relationships. The POCSO Act must be amended to acknowledge that consensual relationships among adolescents are a social reality and criminalizing those harms rather than protects young individuals.
