Symphonies of the Sea: The Role of Songs as a Trope in Amitav Ghosh’s “Sea of Poppies”

Abstract

This paper aims to understand the role of songs as a trope in Amitav Ghosh’s “Sea Of Poppies”, focusing on how they add depth to the characters and the story, besides their rhythmic and musical efficacy. It underscores the importance of Bhojpuri folk songs in establishing and reclaiming cultural identities in a time of rapid change and cultural hybridization induced by the British colonialism. The songs in the novel give an insight into the cultural backgrounds, emotions and feelings of the characters and act as sources of strength and comfort for the characters in times of distress. By analyzing important moments in the novel when the songs are sung, the paper highlights the importance of songs in shaping the narrative of the story and deepening the understanding of the characters’ journeys by helping the readers connect to the characters’ life situations and their emotions as they navigate their trials and tribulations.
