Abstract

The "Victorian" era was characterized by a specific set of beliefs, attitudes, and experiences that were shared by citizens of a number of nations, including Russia, America, Spain, and Scandinavia, and which were represented in nineteenth-century literature and civilization. Religion had a significant impact on social and political life, and major advances and discoveries in science were also made during this period.. Major advances and discoveries in science were also made during this time. New methods and perspectives, from Darwin's Origin of Species to Strauss's Life of Jesus, undercut belief in the Bible's literal accuracy . Old religious ideas came into the category of questioning during the Victorian era as a result of advances in many fields.  Different aspects of the belief system were come under debate and suspicion.
