Abstract

This research explores the symbiotic relationship between photography and political activism in India, emphasizing the power of images in social movements. It traces the historical evolution of political activism from pre-independence to contemporary times, focusing on key events like the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, Gujarat Riots, Nirbhaya Protests, and LGBTQ+ Rights Movement. By examining iconic photographs, the study reveals how visual storytelling raises awareness, mobilizes support, and demands accountability. Using a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys and interviews, the research highlights the impact of iconic images on public perception and collective action. Key areas for further research include visual rhetoric, ethical considerations, and the influence of technological innovations in political photography. The study also emphasizes the ethical responsibilities of photographers, activists, and media in representing marginalized communities. Ultimately, it advocates for interdisciplinary approaches to deepen understanding of photography's role in challenging dominant narratives and promoting social change.
